Transposition and Ear Training Exercise for Bassists
Have you ever been at a party or a gig and asked to play Happy Birthday, but you don't know what key people are going to sing it in? Happy Birthday is a tricky tune to harmonise, so jazz bass legend John Goldsby is back on DDB to help you work it out! It's a really valuable exercise in ear training to practice the same tune in all 12 keys, and that's what John recommends in this video. He also helps you to learn the changes so you know what to play next time Uncle Frank asks you to bring your bass to his birthday party!
This lesson is a preview from John's new course, Listen Up! The course is designed to improve your intonation on the double bass, as well as your ear training in general. Learning to hear what's happening around you and playing with great intonation will make a huge difference to your musicianship and set you apart from your peers.
As always, it was a blast filming this course with John, and we are really proud of the result. Ear training and intonation are widely ignored topics by bass players, so we are excited to bring you a resource to help you combat this and improve your ear. Please leave your thoughts on the lesson in the YouTube comments, and welcome John back to DDB! If you are interested in finding out more about the course, there are details at the bottom of this blog post.
