I Got Rhythm - Lesson and Play-Along Performance

In this lesson, jazz bass legend John Goldsby teaches the George Gershwin classic, 'I Got Rhythm'. John walks you through how to form your solos and walking bass lines in the style of bass pioneer Red Mitchell, who recorded this tune with the Hamtpon Hawes Trio in 1955. This was before Red shook up the bass world and switched to playing in 5ths in the late 60s.

With Billy Test on piano and Caroline Boaden on drums, the video features a full performance of the classic tune. We have also provided a play-along track below, so you can practise with the trio.

This video is a preview lesson from John's new course, Team Player: Artistry in the Ensemble.

Please note, in the course, there are full transcriptions, backing tracks with and without the bass, and the bass-only track all available to download.

Team Player: Artistry in the Ensemble

Team Player is a new online course by John Goldsby, comprising lessons, performances, play-along tracks and transcriptions designed to be the ultimate resource for playing in jazz ensembles. It's all there, from intimate duos to hard-swinging trios, from the classic saxophone quartet to a modern sextet with horns. If you're a jazz bassist looking to play bass lines and solos that your bandmates will love, this course is perfect for you. With eight different jazz ensembles to play-along with, it is our most ambitious course to date.
