This scale exercise is a really effective approach to learning the fingerboard. Many bassists suffer from spending most of their time in half and 1st position, with a bit of playing up and down the G string to get the top notes, so this exercise can help you avoid that trap. Working on this 'middle register' can open up your understanding of the fingerboard and give you more creative options for phrasing and improvising. I also work on another, similar exercise with arpeggios. Play these exercises in different keys and positions to get the most from your practice time.
