In this video, we meet our newest tutor to be added to the website, the wonderful Chris Minh Doky. He is a champion of the electric upright bass and an extremely funky guy! We had so much fun filming with him in Gothenburg, Sweden last year, and we are really excited to announce his new course, Funky Bass Vol. 1: Bass Lines is out now.

Meet chris

Chris Minh Doky is a visionary bassist whose unique approach to the double bass has built his reputation as a fearless improviser & sideman to the stars.

Hailing from Denmark, Chris learnt his craft in the bars & clubs of the 90's New York jazz scene, recording & performing with renowned artists, including Michel Camilo, Toots Thielemans, Mike Stern, Dennis Chambers, Biréli Lagrène, Michael Brecker & David Sanborn. As a bandleader, he has recorded 15 albums, including the acclaimed 2025 release New Beginnings.

In this interview, Chris and I talk all things electric upright vs double bass. We discuss his Fly-Auray acoustic bass and his Yamaha SLB300-Pro electric upright bass and how they differ. The conversation includes demonstrations on both instruments, Chris's preferences, how the electric upright works and other gear that Chris uses to tour.

Funky Bass Vol. 1: Bass Lines
