Commissioning a Double Bass with Elinore Morris

Elinore morris and magnus bergström discuss the process of building a bass

Today we meet the wonderful bass maker and luthier Elinore Morris in her beautiful workshop just outside of Gothenburg in Sweden. It was amazing to meet her, explore the workshop and hear some of her amazing hand crafted double basses. In this video, we talk to both Elinore and bass player Magnus Bergström about the process of commissioning an instrument. Elinore and Magnus worked together closely to make a beautiful double bass for Magnus and we hear all about how that worked. We also get a chance to hear the bass that is only 9 days old at the time of filming! It's an essential watch for anyone who is interested in the bass making process.

Meet Elinore

Originally from Zimbabwe, Elinore Morris started playing bass when she was 14. She studied music at Stellenbosch University in South Africa and then violin-making in Norway, taking her journeyman's exam in Markneukirchen, Germany. She moved to Sweden in 2004 and started up a violin repair business which evolved to work almost exclusively with double basses. Since then, Elinore has built and repaired basses for numerous bassists, including the legendary Swedish artist, Anders Jormin. It was amazing to visit her in Sweden and get to see some of her wonderful work.
