Reginald Veal
Jazz DOUBLE BASS TUTOR
With an illustrious career spanning over 40 years, Reginald “Swingdoom” Veal is one of the living legends of the Jazz bass world. Hailing from New Orleans, he has worked with numerous incredible artists, including Wynton Marsalis, Ahmad Jamal, Elvin Jones, McCoy Tyner, Pharoah Sanders, Ellis Marsalis, Terence Blanchard, Cassandra Wilson, Brandford Marsalis, Harry Connick Jr., Dianne Reeves, Nicholas Payton and the list goes on and on. Reginald is the original bassist for the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra.
Reginald represents the balanced extensions of the artist’s aesthetic and spiritual ideas, mixed with a universal awareness for the world that surrounds him. His love and openness for all music that lifts the spirit and touches the depths of the soul, inarguably has contributed to his musical genius and catapulted him among the ranks of the greatest bass players alive today. He believes when music comes from the heart and soul it is real and what comes from the heart reaches the heart. People close to Reginald say he can be a nonconformist. But that is what he thinks his fans love about him the most, the fact that they can depend on him to not follow the norm.
“I’ll tell you a little secret about Reginald Veal. I’ve always been very happy he never decided to be part of the New York scene—to kind of hit the Bradley’s scene, the Vanguard scene, and work around with the New York cats. Because if that were the case, a lot of us wouldn’t be working!”
We loved meeting Reginald to film his course, he is such an inspiring person and player! Check out our interview to get to know him too.
