Phoebe Russell
Advanced Classical Tutor
Phoebe Russell is a virtuosic soloist, performer, and educator from Melbourne, Australia. Since 2017, Phoebe has been the principal double bassist of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. She is also regularly invited as a guest principal at prestigious orchestras, including the Australian World Orchestra and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, working under conductors such as Sir Simon Rattle, Gustavo Dudamel, Andris Nelsons, Daniel Barenboim, and Zubin Mehta.
Phoebe Russell studied at the Australian National Academy of Music with Damien Eckersley before moving to Berlin aged 17 to study at the Berlin Philharmonic’s prestigious Karajan Academy. Within months she made her debut with the Berlin Philharmonic and has since performed in more than 20 countries across the world with orchestras such as the Radio Symphony Orchestra Berlin, Deutsches Symphonie Orchester, and the Impossible Orchestra led by Alondra de La Parra in Mexico. In addition, Phoebe plays with Ensemble Q, a dynamic new chamber music ensemble in Australia that collaborate around the country with world-class musicians.
As an avid soloist, Phoebe has played with the Tasmanian and Canberra Symphony Orchestras, the Baden Baden Philharmonie, the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, and at the Berlin Philharmonic lunch concert series.
As a passionate educator, she is a lecturer in double bass at The University of Queensland and a faculty member of the Queensland Conservatorium of Music. She has coached the Australian Youth Orchestra’s National Music Camp, given classes at the Guildhall School of Music in London, the Melbourne and Sydney Conservatorium of Music, the Australian National Academy of Music, and the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá.
Phoebe Russell is delighted to join the Discover Double Bass artist faculty in 2023 as a specialist in advanced classical bass.

Phoebe’s courses with Discover Double Bass
Phoebe Russell’s first course with Discover Double Bass is focussed on advanced classical bass skills, including technique, orchestral excerpts, and solo repertoire. It’s called Smash Your Audition! and is suitable for any classical bass players of intermediate level and above, audition or no audition!
Phoebe’s second course, Left Hand Technique for the Advancing Bassist, is designed for intermediate to advanced classical bassists looking to master left hand technique.
