Orchestral Double Bass Tutor

Joseph Conyers is a committed performer, educator and director based in Philadelphia. In 2023, Joseph was appointed as the principal bassist of the Philadelphia Orchestra which he joined in 2010, following positions with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and the Grand Rapids Symphony (MI) as principal bass. He teaches at the Juilliard School, NY and is a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music, where he studied with Harold Robinson and Edgar Meyer.

Joseph is devoted to education and community engagement and has taught at many prestigious music festivals and institutions across America, including the Philadelphia International Music Festival and Temple University (PA). He is also the founder and executive director of nonprofit ‘Project 440’ which has used music as a tool to engage, educate and inspire young musicians since 2007. Partners of this project have included Carnegie Hall, The Philadelphia Orchestra, The Curtis Institute of Music, the New York State Summer School of the Arts, and The Settlement Music School (PA).

In 2019 Joseph received the Sphinx Organisation Medal of Excellence and in 2018 received the C. Hartman Kuhn Award, the highest honour bestowed a musician of The Philadelphia Orchestra.
