Anders Jormin

Masterclass Artist

Anders Jormin is a celebrated double bassist, composer, arranger and an ECM artist. Hailing from Jönköping, Sweden, Anders has spent the last 40 years at the forefront of improvised music in Europe and beyond. Known particularly for his long-term musical partnership with pianist Bobo Stenson, he has also performed with numerous acclaimed artists such as, Charles Lloyd, Tomasz Stańko, Elvin Jones, Don Cherry, Lee Konitz, Joe Henderson, Paul Motian, Norma Winstone and Kenny Wheeler.

Anders’s musical education began at home with his father, who was a professional jazz musician. He learnt to play jazz standards from a young age with his family, before studying classical piano and bass at Gothenburg’s Musikhögskolan. This training, combined with his love for jazz and Swedish folk traditions creates a unique sound heard in both his playing and his composing.

Anders Jormin began his collaboration with Bobo Stenson in the late 90s. The trio have released multiple acclaimed albums together since then, including Reflections (1993), which won both the Swedish Grammy and the Golden Record Award, a first in the music world. 2005 saw the release of the landmark recording Goodbye, with Paul Motian on drums.

From solo bass albums, releases featuring compositions for brass ensembles, symphony orchestras, choirs, folk singers and much more, Anders Jormin has released multiple recordings as a bandleader. The variety in his compositional style is inspiring, as well as the virtuosic melodicism with which he plays. Anders Jormin’s melodic and expressive style has led to him being one of the music world’s most in-demand bassists.

A treasure – everything a bassist should be.
