Shifting in Thumb Position

Shifting lesson with Phoebe Russell using the koussevitzky concerto

In this lesson, Queensland Symphony Orchestra’s Phoebe Russell talks through techniques to improve your shifting. Using an excerpt from Koussevitzky's Double Bass Concerto, Phoebe teaches using arm weight, the elbow as a lever and bow speed to make shifting around the fingerboard easier. She suggests using repertoire that you are working on to practice left hand technique, so that you can understand the application of that technique to your everyday playing.

There is a free transcription for this lesson, complete with fingerings and markings, available below.

This is a preview lesson from Phoebe’s brand new course, Left Hand Technique for the Advancing Bassist. There is more information about these incredible new lessons below the video, or you can check out the course here.
