Innovation in Bass Making - Luthiers at the ISB
An Interview with Luthiers at the ISB 2023
ISB (International Society of Bassists) Convention 2023, Ann Arbor, Michigan.
In this video, we're at the ISB 2023 Convention in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where we meet some incredible luthiers to discuss innovation in double bass making. We cover topics such as ways to reduce the use of endangered woods, reduced-size instruments and new developments in bass making. Big thanks to Gael McKeon, Kathy Reilly, Joey Naeger, Mitch Moehring & Arnold Schnitzer for joining us and for sharing so much!
Is your bass 100% ebony free?
First up, I talk to Gael McKeon, Kathy Reilly and Joey Naeger about how to reduce the use of ebony when making double bassists, why it's essential, and what alternative materials there are out there.
Instrument sizes, from 5/8 to 7/8
Next, I chat with Mitch Moehring to check out one of his basses and discuss double bass sizes, notably the viability of smaller instruments.
The Futuristic, Ergonomic Bass
Finally, I catch up with Arnold Schnitzer to discuss his incredible asymmetric Ergonomic Bass. This instrument is one of the most innovative instruments by any luthier and one of my personal favourites!
All of these luthiers are highly skilled and at the forefront of instrument making, with new ideas, concepts, and materials, so it was fascinating to find out more about their work. Of course, there were many many other incredible luthiers also attending the ISB, who we hope we can catch up with next time!
Thank you to everyone who took part in this video and we hope you enjoy it! Links to all the bass makers are below the video.
